In a significant milestone for the Indian coffee industry, the country’s coffee exports surged by 45% in 2024, reaching an all-time high of $1.68 billion, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

Key Drivers Behind the Growth:
A sharp 60% increase in Robusta coffee prices fueled by rising global coffee demand.
Stockpiling ahead of the EU’s new deforestation regulations, which are expected to raise the cost of agricultural exports.

India’s Position in the Global Coffee Market:
India ranks as the 8th largest coffee producer globally (2022-23).
Brazil remains the world’s largest coffee producer, accounting for about 40% of global production.
India is the 5th largest producer of Robusta coffee, which makes up 72% of its total coffee production.

Coffee Production in India:
Major coffee-producing states: Karnataka (largest), Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

Types of coffee grown:
Arabica: Higher quality, trades at a premium.
Robusta: Economically significant, with strong global demand.
The remarkable growth in India’s coffee exports highlights the country’s increasing prominence in the global coffee trade, with Robusta leading the surge.
