Northeast Region States Meet 2025: Boosting Fisheries Development in India
The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, recently organized the ‘Northeast Region States Meet 2025’ to drive the growth of the fisheries sector in the region. During the event, the foundation for key fisheries development projects worth ₹50 crores under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was laid, aiming to strengthen the fisheries value chain.
Key Highlights of the Meet • The Organic Fisheries Cluster in Soreng District, Sikkim, was officially notified to promote organic fisheries and aquaculture, with a special focus on amur carp and other carps. • NABARD will provide financial and technical support, capacity building, and assist in forming fisheries-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) to enhance the cluster’s development.
Government’s Focus on Fisheries Development The Department of Fisheries has previously notified four key fisheries clusters to boost specialized fisheries and aquaculture across India: • Pearl Cluster – Hazaribagh, Jharkhand • Ornamental Fisheries Cluster – Madurai, Tamil Nadu • Seaweed Cluster – Lakshadweep • Tuna Cluster – Andaman & Nicobar

The Northeast Region States Meet 2025 marks a significant step in enhancing India’s fisheries sector, supporting sustainable aquaculture, and boosting the livelihoods of fish farmers across the country.
