PM Fasal Bima Yojana 2026: How to Claim Crop Insurance

Agriculture in India is highly dependent on weather conditions, making farmers vulnerable to crop losses caused by heavy rainfall, drought, floods, hailstorms and other natural calamities. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) 2026 provides crop insurance protection to eligible farmers against specified agricultural risks and helps reduce their financial losses.

Under this government crop insurance scheme, farmers can receive compensation for eligible crop losses according to the scheme’s operational guidelines. However, reporting crop damage within the prescribed deadline is important, particularly for localized calamities and post-harvest losses. Farmers can report such losses through the Crop Insurance App, the Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline (14447), their bank or local agriculture officials.

What Is PM Fasal Bima Yojana 2026?

The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is a government-backed crop insurance scheme launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Its primary objective is to protect farmers against financial losses resulting from specified crop failures and natural calamities.

The scheme covers notified food crops, oilseeds and annual commercial and horticultural crops, subject to state notifications and eligibility conditions.

Key objectives of PMFBY include:

  • Providing financial protection against eligible crop losses.
  • Supporting farmers when notified crops fail due to insured risks.
  • Encouraging the adoption of modern agricultural practices.
  • Reducing financial uncertainty in farming.
  • Supporting agricultural investment and farmers’ income stability.

For the 2026 agricultural seasons, farmers should check their state-specific crop notifications, insurance company details and enrolment deadlines before applying.

Which Crop Losses Are Covered Under PMFBY?

PMFBY provides protection against specified risks during different stages of crop cultivation. However, compensation depends on the insured crop, notified area, applicable policy conditions and assessment of the damage.

The major coverage categories include:

  1. Prevented sowing: Financial protection may be available when adverse seasonal conditions prevent sowing or planting in an insured area, subject to scheme conditions.
  1. Standing crop losses: Eligible yield losses caused by insured risks such as drought, floods, cyclones, pests and diseases may qualify for compensation.
  1. Localized calamities: Individual farm losses caused by specified events such as hailstorms, landslides, inundation, cloudbursts and natural fires due to lightning can be assessed.
  1. Post-harvest losses: Certain harvested crops left in cut-and-spread or small-bundled conditions for drying may receive protection against specified risks, including cyclones, cyclonic rains, unseasonal rains and hailstorms, for up to 14 days after harvest.

Farmers should remember that not every type of crop damage automatically qualifies for insurance compensation.

PM Fasal Bima Yojana 2026: Step-by-Step Crop Insurance Claim Process

Farmers who experience insured crop damage should follow the correct reporting and claim procedure to avoid unnecessary delays.

Step 1: Report Crop Damage Within 72 Hours

The first and most important step is to report eligible localized crop damage or post-harvest losses within 72 hours of the incident.

Farmers can report crop losses through:

  • Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline: 14447.
  • Official Crop Insurance App.
  • Concerned bank branch.
  • Local agriculture department.
  • District agriculture or government officials.
  • Concerned insurance company.

Timely reporting helps initiate the individual farm-level loss assessment process.

Step 2: Provide the Required Information

While reporting crop damage, farmers should provide accurate information to identify their insurance application and affected agricultural land.

Important details include:

  • Farmer’s name and registered mobile number.
  • PMFBY application or policy details.
  • Insured crop and affected area.
  • Survey or land parcel number.
  • Date and nature of crop damage.
  • Bank account details, where required.
  • Photographs and supporting evidence, where applicable.

Incorrect or incomplete information can create difficulties during claim verification.

Step 3: Complete the Crop Loss Assessment

After receiving the complaint, the concerned insurance company initiates the assessment process according to PMFBY guidelines.

For localized calamities and eligible post-harvest losses, a joint assessment may be conducted by representatives of the insurance company and state government. Digital photographs, geographical information and field-level evidence may support the assessment.

For widespread yield losses, claims are generally calculated using the notified area’s actual yield and threshold yield, based on Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) and approved technology-based assessments wherever applicable.

Step 4: Submit Supporting Documents

Farmers should keep their insurance and land-related records ready for verification.

Commonly required documents include:

  • Aadhaar card or other accepted identity proof.
  • PMFBY insurance application receipt.
  • Bank passbook or account details.
  • Land ownership or cultivation documents.
  • Crop details and affected area information.
  • Crop damage photographs, where applicable.
  • Claim acknowledgement or loss reporting reference.

Additional documents may be requested by the insurance company depending on the claim category and state-specific requirements.

Step 5: Track PMFBY Claim Status Online

After submitting the claim information, farmers can monitor their application and insurance status through the official PMFBY portal.

Visit the official website: PMFBY Official Portal.

The portal provides access to application status and other crop insurance services. Farmers should keep their application or policy reference details available when checking claim progress.

Step 6: Receive Eligible Crop Insurance Compensation

Once the loss assessment and claim verification are completed, the insurance company processes the eligible claim according to the applicable scheme guidelines.

Approved compensation is transferred to the farmer’s registered bank account through the prescribed payment mechanism.

The final claim amount depends on the type of loss, insured crop, sum insured, assessed damage, applicable scheme formula and completion of required government and insurance procedures.

Important PMFBY Updates for 2026

Farmers should also be aware of new developments introduced under the crop insurance framework.

From Kharif 2026, the government has announced additional protection measures, including:

  • Wild animal attacks: Crop damage caused by notified wild animals is recognised as an additional localized risk cover, subject to state notification and eligibility.
  • Paddy inundation: Paddy crop losses due to inundation are being brought back under localized calamity coverage.
  • Digital crop loss reporting: Farmers reporting eligible wild animal damage must use the Crop Insurance App and upload geotagged photographs within 72 hours.
  • Technology-based assessment: Digital applications and YES-TECH are being used to improve crop yield estimation and loss assessment.

These changes are particularly relevant to farmers in flood-prone regions and areas affected by human-wildlife conflict. The additional coverage is subject to state-level implementation and applicable guidelines.

What Should Farmers Do If Their PMFBY Claim Is Rejected?

If an insurance claim is rejected or delayed, farmers should not ignore the issue. They can raise a complaint through the Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline by calling 14447.

Farmers can also:

  • Contact their concerned insurance company.
  • Visit the local agriculture department.
  • Approach the District Grievance Redressal Committee (DGRC).
  • Submit missing documents or supporting evidence for verification.
  • Request a review if the application was rejected incorrectly.

The government provides a grievance redressal mechanism through district and state-level committees to address farmers’ complaints.

Conclusion

The PM Fasal Bima Yojana 2026 is an important government initiative for protecting farmers against financial losses caused by eligible crop damage. Understanding the crop insurance claim process, reporting losses within 72 hours for applicable claims, submitting accurate documents and regularly checking claim status can help farmers avoid unnecessary complications.

Farmers should use the official PMFBY portal and Krishi Rakshak Helpline (14447) for authentic information about crop insurance applications, claim reporting and compensation. They should also check their respective state notifications to understand the coverage and eligibility applicable to their crops.
